A suspect has been taken into custody following an armed robbery by masked individuals who seized passports, money, and watches from two individuals.
According to the Chinese embassy, one suspect has been apprehended, and the two victims returned to China on Friday after spending less than two days in the country.
State-run news agency Xinhua reported on Saturday that the two men, referred to only by their surnames Wang and Li, had arrived at Mexico City International Airport on Wednesday evening.
Wang shared on social media that two masked motorcyclists stopped their car at gunpoint near the airport, taking a watch from one passenger and nearly all belongings from the other, including his passport.
"I was stunned at that moment; my only concern was for our safety," he told Xinhua.
After reaching their hotel, the two contacted police and China’s round-the-clock consular protection hotline.
The embassy stated it had maintained contact with the victims and provided them with replacement travel documents.
