China's military has developed a strategy to strike American military assets that are out of reach, as distance becomes a defensive barrier.
This is the challenge a group of Chinese defense scientists has been tackling. Their solution, made public in a peer‑reviewed journal, provides a detailed blueprint for destroying a US carrier group at a range of 3,000 kilometers (1,865 miles)—exactly the distance between Shanghai and Guam.
The paper, led by associate professor Gao Tianyun, was released in *Tactical Missile Technology*, a leading Chinese defense publication, on May 25.
For years, the US Navy's large vessels operated in close proximity to China, stationed in Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, and the South China Sea. This nearness made them susceptible to China's expanding array of "anti‑access/area‑denial" systems—medium-range ballistic missiles, hypersonic glide vehicles, and swarms of cruise missiles.
